Snowflake, Azure Data Factory and dbt

Snowflake Copenhagen User Group

On the 19th December 2024 a Snowflake Copenhagen User Group event took place in Copenhagen. As a co-organizer of this event Ejvind Hald & Tamas Paulik held a presentation regarding data platform including live demo. The presentation was also streamed live on YouTube via infrastructure facilities provided by Lund & Bendsen, and it can be view on the link below.

Typical setup and need in Danish companies

In the presentation we are showing an example of how we handle typical challenges for Danish companies regarding data platforms. They often use SQL Server and many companies have a preference for Microsoft tools like Azure Data Factory. We show how this can be configured so data ingestion works simply with Snowflake and dbt. There is a live demo of best practices for dbt and a well-structured Terraform setup with execution on Terraform Cloud.

Data and Analytics Going Forward

Faglig Fredag

On August 16th 2024, Ejvind was invited to speak at the “Faglig Fredag” event at the IT company Lund & Bendsen in Copenhagen. It was an exciting day with many great dialogues with the attendees. The event was also live streamed on YouTube, and it can be viewed at the link below.

Modern Data Platform and Democratization of Data

At the event, we provided our suggestions on how data can create value for the customer and improve internal efficiency. A part of better internal performance in the company is a data platform that offers easy access to verified data. This can be established by offering data products that are accessed via data contracts.

Which are the best red wines?

AI and Large Language Models (LLM):

With the release of ChatGPT AI is becoming much more relevant, and many companies are trying to use it. In the video below regarding best red wines, I am showing how easy you can use such models directly in Snowflake Cortex via Streamlit. The video is best viewed with 1080 pixels resolution.

Safe to use:

Along with the increasing usage of ChatGPT comes a concern about usage of prompts and more for other purposes, than it was originally intended for. These models in Snowflake are private and will only be used to answer the provided questions. So they are private and respect any potential confidentiality in the conversation.

Less frequent used amoung existing customers is Databricks and Fabric, but we can also contribute with these. And finally, cloud architecture and security for providers like Azure, AWS and GDP is on our daily to-do list for customers.

A View From The Top

External Adaption:

As I see it companies of today need to add digital services into their offering and thereby go to market strategy – otherwise someone else will do it. It is key that senior management adopts the view of being partly a tech company. Examples span over military, car producers, banks, insurance and many more industries, where long term survival can be depending on proper incorporation of technology in the end product.

Internal Efficiency:

To execute on the market strategy, you need to have great teams to do the job. I have worked with several teams and been trying to help them develop high efficiency via an environment of trust. One key inspiration to this is The Three Ways perspective originally developed by Gene Kim. Another aspect is organization where tech teams often are organized for cost optimization rather than for speed optimization.

Implementation:

My current work is focused on data platform, and to implement this a selection of proper technology must be done among other things. I have worked with single vendor strategy for Microsoft Data products for +15 years, but in recent years I have also adopted best-of-breed strategy with selection of individual vendors. Both approaches have their pros and cons and one important criterion is to select what fits best given the current people and infrastructure landscape.
